July 3, 2012...Mission Beach

We packed up and were on the road by 10am, not the earliest of starts, maybe those few days off made us a little rusty?  Mission Beach is our destination today.  The countryside really changed today.  The area is becoming more rainforesty, tropical and lush...  a joy to the eye.  Sugarcane fields are becoming more frequent, with their slightly sickening sweet smell beginning to fill the air.  Road kill is also becoming more frequent.  Rotting carcass stench combined with the sickening sweet smell of the sugarcane is a "Pheeew" cocktail, almost knocks you out!  I found myself holding my breath until the smell dissipated in my helmet, and reached back to see if my vents were open or closed.  We turned off and enjoyed the tropical foliage as we wound our way through the rainforest into the Mission Beach area…taking much caution, looking out for cassowaries that inhabit the area.  I have to tell you that the government has posted quite humorous large signs warning of the potential damage to a cassowary and your car…love the signs!  I couldn't believe it…I saw a cassowary in the bush off to the side of the road.  I had never seen one before, and they look just like their picture! ha ha ha  There, a backpackers van had pulled off the road, I slowed down, decided to stop and get a solid look.  Missy was out of her van approaching the cassowary with an apple…hmmm this could be trouble, they are not very friendly creatures!  I decided to stay on the bike just in case Mr. Cass decided to attack.  Missy was spooked, phew for her sake, and she tossed the apple at Mr Cass, who was not interested in fruit but made his way back into the rainforest.  Kev was radioing in my ear, "that was not the best place to pull off the road", and did not realize what I had encountered!

Cassowaries look like a prehistoric colorful scary emu, and you can bet your booty that I wanted to see more!  We passed the Mission Beach City Council camping site and decided to see if they had any room for us…we were in luck, one space left next to the creek and beach…Perfect!  That creek looks a little iffy, I don't know if there are crocs up here, but that water does look sus!  I parked my bike between the creek and our tent, just in case!  We set up camp and then took a stroll into the small beachside community…a very laid back, quaint town nestled in-between the beach (that looks directly out to Dunk Island) and the rainforest.  We were digging this scene… totally! We strolled back and decided to start on dinner...usually easier and best to get started before the sun goes down.  It just so happened that tonight as the sun was setting this magnificent full moon was rising over the Coral Sea directly in front of our camp site.  All dinner preparations came to a full halt…it was time to grab the glass of wine and walk the 15 meters onto the beach, slouch down beside a palm and watch!   Heaven!  Bush sushi for dinner made the night complete!!  Bush sushi is rice cooked with miso soup, canned salmon and soy sauce.  Now a very strange thing did happen while we were in the tent, something that I'm still puzzled about?  It was only about 30 minutes after we had zipped ourselves into the tent…We heard an open mouth, caustic, throaty hiss, and it was not human!  The hair raised on the back of my neck, and I had goose bumps all over…it happened again!  Kev said "what the heck was that?", without hesitation I said "a croc?" Kev scooted up tight against me, "Really?" he said…"that's my gut feeling" I said.  I kept listening for dragging or rustling sounds, but it didn't happen…the scare was over!  We both didn't want to leave the safety of our thin nylon tent and finally fell asleep.  Dawn broke once again with the familiar symphony of bird calls.  We were eager to get up and check the area for any signs of our so called mind made croc?  My theory is this…a croc traveling down the creek towards the beach encountered Phe Phe in his path, hissed at this unfamiliar intruder in his way and continued on?  Now maybe I am just full of it, a good story teller, or simply just have a very colorful imagination…we will never know…actually I think I posess all three qualities…ha ha ha!!

July 2, 2012...Alligator Creek

A gorgeous day, I think that we have seen the last of the rain for a while…fingers crossed!  We will be riding to Alligator Creek today which is part of the Bowling Green Bay National Park.  Our camping space is reserved, all was sorted, and we were feeling very rested from our couple of days at sea .  It was a fairly uneventful and relaxed day of riding.  The Queensland Government have cleverly posted trivia signs along the roadside to keep you alert…we decided to play along!  "What is the name of Queensland's state flower?"….Hummm, I'm thinking the bird of paradise, Kev is impressed at my answer, I'm pretty impressed too!  Now I'm looking for the answer sign…50 kms, 100 kms, 150 kms, 200 kilometers…no sign, no answer, no fair!!!  We pulled into our site around 3pm and we were all gung-ho to set up camp.  Bonus, our site has a picnic table... that will definitely make life easier!!  Wallabies hopped by us pausing for a moment to check out what we were doing, bush turkeys darted around haphazardly like there tails were on fire, I was thrilled with this very amusing free bush entertainment. The Ranger stopped by and invited us to a presentation later that night…cool movies under the stars!…more free entertainment!  Kev and I explored the nearby creek, wondering if alligators lived there, and, if they did could they make it up the steep embankment to the tent before starting on us for dinner.  Later we learned that there were no alligators in this creek…phew.  We enjoyed the Rangers presentation, discussion and the mixed group of people that showed up that night to learn about park and surrounding area.

June 28 - July 1, 2012...Whitsunday Islands

I can feel it…there will be no rain today…."Om"…ha ha ha.  Today Kev and I are riding to the marvelous Whitsundays.  I have always wanted to visit, and now I can't believe that it's happening!  I found an awesome deal on the wotif website for Airlie Beach, that happen to be in our budget so I booked it.  Today was actually a fabulous ride.  It did not rain….so chanting does work!  The skies were not the brightest, but the temperature gauge was moving up…yeah baby!  Meandering our way into the Airlie Beach area, I was totally waiting for that "Wow" moment…It just did not happen!  The skies were grey, which meant the water was grey, there just was not that picturesque  postcard pop that I was looking for.  I was, however, thrilled to be warm and dry!  Airlie Beach is home to a lot of young european backpackers, who come to drink and party…It kinda reminds me of Mexico's Cabo!  We checked into our small place on the side of the hill, lugged the gear in, opened up the sliding verandah door and marveled at the fabulous view of Boathaven Bay.  I had the camera out snapping some shots when into my lens view flew a beautiful sulfur crested cockatoo!  He landed on the rail and just watched me continue to mess with the camera…it was totally cool!  I had some almonds an thought that he/she would like a few…as soon as I placed them on the table the word was out, five other cockys flew in, it was amazing.  The cocky crew actually flew in every evening for an almond cocktail…loved it!

The weather was brighter every day and Kev and I decided to take a sailing trip through the Whitsundays for a couple of nights.  Now this was the way to totally slow things down!  We would be away from land, the bikes, and phone service.  It definitely was a fabulous investment, and an experience that we will never forget.  There were 3 other international couples on board and a crew of 2.  Because we booked this trip on a whim… Kev and I soon found out that we would have no privacy and would be bunking with the crew…Right On!  All Aboard!…ha ha ha, had to say that!  Motoring slowly out of the harbor it was not long until we were in open water.  I could feel my body starting to grow heavy and relax back into the hard fiberglass deck…I soon realized that  there would be no decision making of any kind for 3 days!  No traffic decisions, road decisions, animal alerts, weather alerts, tent assembly, food assembly, bike packing, bike maintenance, charging issues, water issues, petrol issues…Ahh, and to top it off  I'm surrounded by my most fav thing in the world…turquoise water! Excuse me…Let me just take a brief moment to reflect on all of this…Man we live in a beautiful world!  Captain Sam began to rattle off all the dos and don'ts, tacking maneuvers, where to sit, where not to sit, grab, not grab of the Silent Night…"Does everyone understand?" Captain Sam authoritatively stated…I glanced around at the international eyes of Switzerland, Germany, Bolivia, France, Italy and America…I pretty sure team America got it, but I'm not sure about the rest!

Ahh I think that I'm gonna have to learn how to sail!!!…What a fabulous feeling being powered by Lady Earth's breath.  The Silent Night is a very sexy boat, and really it is all about looking good on the water…ha ha ha!  She definitely had all the right moves sailing across the clear turquoise waters, so much so that a pod of bottle nose dolphins decided to play in her wake,… so lucky!  We sailed into Tongue Bay and dropped anchor for the night.  The night waters became dark and glassy as the sun set behind the islands.  We had all worked up quite an appetite, the foreign tongues of Team International had come to a halt as we all devoured deckie Benny's dinner of chicken surprise, salad and bread… Surprised that deck hand Bennie had such culinary skills, ha ha ha   The next day we were all up, out and sunning on the beach before 8am!  Not just any old beach, but the famous Whitehaven Beach!  I have carried a picture of this beach in my bike panniers, and now I was here…really amazing and quite unbelievable.  We were the first ones on the beach and found a great spot to lay down our poor quality, yet, expensive towels that we had purchased especially for the trip.  Now to play in the crystal clear waters that became even more turquoise blue by the minute as the sun moved higher in the sky, you would need to wear a stinger suit to protect you from the stinging jellyfish that occupy these waters.  It is basically like wearing a thin full piece lycra wetsuit,  it's totally all the rage and beyond sexy.  My thought is, well at least you can see me against this purest of white sands…whereas, before my skin tone pretty much blended right in!…ha ha ha  We soaked in the morning rays, swam protected amongst the stingers, watched the black rays hover through the shallows, tasted the lime bodies of green ants against our tongues (important tip… have the right end of the ant point at your tongue or you will get bit!!) and marveled at the swirling white sands of this absolutely mesmerizing and breathtaking beach.

Just when you think that your having the day of your life, it just keeps getting better!  We continued to sail around, in an out of the Whitsunday Island group to an absolutely magical snorkeling area named Blue Pearl Bay.  On went the sexy stinger suits, mask and snorkel, but no fins, Kev and I were the first ones in, and last ones out!  This was the most beautiful snorkeling area I had ever been to…even topped some of the diving areas we've been too, I would say.  If I had to describe what I saw in one sentence it would go like this:  A perfect, busy, complete oceanic ecosystem that reminded me of an underwater, florescent, Cirque du Sole reef.  Topping this off, a beautiful lone manta ray stealthily glided by…Ahhhh!  I really think that Ahhhh is not enough…it definitely deserves an Ooooh…And I know that was kind of 2 sentences!…ha ha ha.  After snorkeling we sailed over to Langford Reef, ankored and jumped in the zodiac that zipped us across to a sand bar beach that pops up at low tide.  We snoozed a little, watched the sun set and polished off the last of our red wine…The day was just bloody amazing!  Back to the harbor tomorrow I will try and bring myself back from this fantasy life and adventure…but I am fighting it!

Back on dry land my legs were a little wobbly.  Kev and I checked in at the Backpackers Hostel at Airlie Beach for the night, collected our gear from storage, checked on the bikes and got ready for our departure the next day.

June 15 - 27, 2012...Queensland, slowly blogging our way north!...(Beware too much blog! :))

Ahh…time flies when your having the adventure of your lifetime!..I am finally getting back to the blog, and can't believe that we were just pulling into Maroochydore when I last pulled up the blog…my bad!

I do remember feeling very excited to be under a roof and sleeping in a bed that night, especially since I was beginning to feel like crap!  After checking into our accommodation I soaked in the warmth of a hot shower and felt my body slowly start to relax.  I couldn't help myself…I stood there until the hot water ran out!!  I was not feeling too crash hot …I don't know if I was just purely over whelmed by the HU (Horizons Unlimited) Conference, too much red wine the final night, or was coming down with a cold?  I think that is a combination of it all… and was beginning to realize that I had probably caught what Kev had…bummer, I do not have time for this!  Crap…I am the worst sickie, ya know!  Kev was not fully over his cold either and for the next couple of days we were thankful that we had a roof over our head and a warm bed to crawl into…we'll just wait it out!

The weather was not the greatest when we arrived in Maroochydore, but there were definite signs of improvement.  The first couple of days we lay low recuperating from the conference and nursed our colds hoping that the weather would fine up enough for us to go on some day rides. I have to tell you about my food shopping experience…you have all heard about the chicken crossing the road…well I was crossing the road and was pleasantly surprised when I was met by a bush turkey who walked next to me in crosswalk…sometimes the things that happen are uncanny, gobble gobble... I love it!!!!  Kev and I also spent a couple of days at Lachlan's house working on the bikes.  Lachlan built a super cool table that folds down from the side of Kev's pannier, and a storage tube for my bike.  I continuously find it wonderfully beautiful when we meet people that can impact our lives…We met Lachlan at the Horizon Unlimited conference in Dayboro…we were impacted by many cool people there!  OK…We did manage to get in a couple of glorious rides in while we were in this blissful area.  One day we explored the Glasshouse Mountains region and surrounding areas, and I can tell you that we were pleasantly surprised when we came across dirt roads to play on!  We also ventured around, up and down the Sunshine Coastal …just absolutely stunning!  We were lucky enough to have Michael, (the son of a great Kiwi family we had stayed with) come up from Brissy to show us some sights, even the Big Pineapple…ha ha ha…thanks Michael!  Lan and Skilly, a couple of adventure riders we had met at the HU Conference were kind enough to keep tack of us and invite us to their place for a home cooked meal.  It was a fabulous night of food, friendship and travel tips.  Lan and Skilly being seasoned adventurers gave us some great advice.  We planned our next leg and soaked up every skerik of info we could!…Thanks for the fabulous hospitality - Lan and Skilly…hope to meet you on the road, somewhere some day! :)  The Sunshine Coast is a beautiful place, a little slice of heaven you could say?

Fully recovered from our colds, Kev and I were once again traveling north.  We are definitely ready for some more camping and can't wait to test our table out.  Kev inputed the address into his phone for Inskip.  The phone is actually working fairly well as a navigation tool for now.  It can become a problem though... as it is continually pulling data, and can drain our megabytes along with our power. Along the way one of our dry bags that Kev carries wriggled loose and fell off his bike.  Firstly, luckily I was behind him and saw this happen, and secondly had enough time to swerve!  This dry bag was no longer waterproof, but it was still useable! Inskip is near Rainbow Beach, and one of the access points, via ferry, to Fraser Island.  This is going to be totally totally cool…and I can't wait to cook on our table that Lachlan built…I just love saying that…"our table that Lachlan built"…ha ha ha!!  Kev booked a camp site the night before, so there is no stopping…well maybe only for some firewood and wine…and now all we had to do is pick out the perfect location!  We rode into the camping locations, woo doggies…they are pretty sandy, this is a little challenging, bro!  In some parts we were carefully ride/straddle throttle/walking the bikes through deep sandy grooves trying not to dump it.  Oh yeah I was beginning to work up a sweat…most of it nerves…ha ha ha!   We decided to park the bikes and walk out into potential camping spots and give the awkward bike sand shuffle a rest.  We finally came across the sweetest camp site ever…and bonus there was tan bark that packed most of the trail in…SCORE!  Too cool…we propped the bikes up on their center stands on a couple of pieces of firewood…thank god the pieces were nice and flat, it all seems to be working out!  The tent goes up without a hitch…time to pour some wine and go for a walk on the beach…Heaven!  It was time to get serious and lay down the table that Lachlan built…ha ha ha, and get to cooking, but I was having a seriously hard time taking my eyes off the pastel pinks and blue colors of the beach sunset! Oh just one more wine and I will start dinner on the whisper lite stove that is resting on the table that Lachlan built!…ha ha ha…just can't help myself, guys!  Ok I bet you would like to know what I cooked on the stove that set on the table that Lachlan built…hey???  Well it was a rice concoction that included pesto and vegetables.  It tasted mighty good, well maybe the bottle of wine that we consumed may have had something to do with it…ha ha ha…, it was a great day, and shaping up to be a fantastic night!

The night sky was beyond description!  Every star that could shine was twinkling…"Look at me…NO…Look at me!", it was simply amazing!!  I should have gazed at the midnight blue skies all night long?..sounds like a song!…ha ha ha.  I can't get over how comfortable the ground was/is…I seem to sleep really well?  The surf just pounded the sandy embankment below us … if there was anything scary outside I would not have heard it, I found that very comforting.  The surf roared, and then the skies opened up…our little 2 1/2 man tent was pounded by fat juicy rain drops the entire night…big ones that actually dent and bounce off the nylon it was pretty awesome.  Kev and I were cozy inside…I hope it eases in the morning?

It was pretty wet outside when we unzipped and rolled out of our tent…ha ha ha …yes, you actually have to roll out, or do that awkward daddy long leg step over, out and up…ha ha ha maybe I'm just getting old, and that is how it feels to me!!  Its all good!  This morning it is spitting and slightly dreary, although…fingers crossed there is a slight chance that it could clear!  We have booked a tour of Fraser Island today and they will be picking us up from Inskip Point at 7:50 am!  Gotta get a move on…eat brekky, safely secure our gear, and ride our bikes out to the parking area before the point.  The 4wd bus will pick us up before driving onto the ferry bound for Fraser Island.

I'm glad that we did not attempt to ride our bikes on Fraser.  The sand would have most definitely been quite an issue!  Even the bus had a few devilish moments!  Fraser Island was pretty much how I remembered it as a young girl…nothing had really changed in 32 years since I was there…really a beautiful thing!  Fraser Island is the largest sand island in the world, spanning over 123 kilometers in length and is strikingly beautiful! It was fantastic to enjoy the luxury of being able to sit back and relax, listen to our driver, Woody's, yarns, and take in the beauty as he maneuvered this 4wd beast of a bus over the sandy island side!  The morning started off quite dreary and drizzly as we made our way through the awesome forests to Lake McKenzie.  Lucky for us,  it did eventually fine up and we enjoyed the rest of our day in sunshine.  Now that the sun was out Kev and I enjoyed a very cool refreshing float down Eli Creek… one of the crystal clear freshwater creeks of Fraser Island.  We stopped at the Maheno, one of Fraser Islands wrecks.  The Maheno was built in 1905 and was one of the first turbine driven steamers.  In 1935 the Maheno drifted helplessly onto Fraser Island's ocean beach when its tow line was snapped in a cyclonic storm on its way to Japan. The contrast of the rusting boat beneath the crisp pale blue skies, clear turquoise waters and white sands was captivating.  I found myself snapping picture after picture at every angle possible, until the bus was about to leave with out me…ha ha ha.  I could feel the draw towards the decaying body of the Maheno, it had so many stories to tell, in life and death…ahh I could have stayed there for hours listening!  We were also lucky enough to see dingos…I counted 10!

The next morning we awoke to rain.  Ok lets just wait it out we thought…but it kept on raining and raining and raining!!  RightieO… lets try and get everything sorted out in the tent before we try and transport everything back in and on the bikes.  We moved as quickly as we could…this was going to be an interesting day!  Already wet, sandy and somewhat steamy from our fast pack up pace we climbed on our bikes and rode north in hopes of clear skies!

We were not going to get a break today!  We rode continually in rain for as long as we could…the chills were starting to set in now!  I could definitely hear it in Kev's radio communications, and my legs were now shivering against the bike.  Stopping for petrol in Bundaberg Kev asked the attendant for accommodation advice.  There would be no camping it tonight.  A dry room, any room as long as it had a bath!  The attendant directed us to Bagara Beach, which was 15 K towards the coast.  In that last 15 K's I could not get my mind off the idea of a hot bath.   The second motel that we pulled into had a room with a spa tub…Score!  Ahh you can bet your booties that once I entered the room I made a b-line directly to the bathroom and turned on the hot water.  Peeling off all my wet gear I jumped in the tub and finally stopped shivering.  We soaked for at least an hour…ahh warm water never felt so good!  There was a small space heater in the room so I arranged all of our heavy wet riding gear in drying positions, turned on the ceiling fan and hoped that our gear would dry!

I slept like a log last night…a wonderful feeling!  A quick peep outside revealed damp overcast weather.  It was not raining this moment, but the chances were high that it would soon do so.  Kev and I have an arrangement…we take turns in calling the decisions of the day.  Today was my choice in movement, lunch location and sleep choice!…Lucky me!!  Ha ha ha….I did not disappoint, today I could not make up my mind…ha ha ha!  I turned to google weather for the answer, but that was still iffy…Im just going to call it…We are going!  My plan was to ride to Yeppoon, a coastal town north of Rockhampton, "Rocky" to the locals.  We packed up, dressed up and saddled up…and yes most everything did somewhat dry overnight…underlining somewhat!…A few damp patches here and there won't kill ya!  My boots were damp… double underlined, maybe that that classifies as wet, not squishy though?  My super long purple woolen socks would protect me?…My socks ROCK!

Wouldn't you know it…just as we are pulling out of the motel it begins to heavily spit!  My fingers are crossed that it does not turn into a steady shower, and for now it seemed to be working.  I could see patches of blue sky and hoped that it would open up the further north we moved.  The one thing about riding in dreary grey weather is that you miss out on some beautiful views that you know are there but can't see through the low clouds and mist.  Today we would be riding over the Tropic of Capricorn, that's pretty exciting and should turn all the grey skies blue hey???  The sun did pop out now and again to reveal a clean crisp Australian landscape.  The entire countryside smelt of a newly washed load of laundry washed in eucalyptus soap and the gum leaves glistened as they dried in the sun.  It was a fabulous moment!  I opened my visor to take it all in and I found myself inhaling large breathes of clean country air…Mmmm…Wonderful!…Feeling a little light headed I eased up on the inhales and concentrated on the road…ahh it is so beautiful!  Kev and I stopped at a petrol station to fill up and decided to break and eat lunch.  I had not packed anything to eat for lunch so we ate petrol station pies and chips, and relaxed our backs into a retro 70's style vinyl chair.  In that short lunch break it had began to rain again…oh well, at least we are 1/2 way to Yeppoon!  We rode the final leg of our day through intermittent rain.  As we rolled into Rocky, I could not help feel that we were riding into Texas!  There were huge fiberglass cows/bulls everywhere…Yee Ha!!…ha ha ha.  Only 30 K's or so to Yappoon…now that deserves a Yippie ky ae!!… Kev and I discussed our night options and being that it was my day to decide I chose sheets instead of sleeping bags!  This rain is getting a little costly…or maybe we just haven't toughened up enough!

We ended up staying 2 nights in Yappoon.  It was an easy decision to make as it continued to rain…I think that the wet and cold had finally caught up with us once more,  we both felt pretty drained.  Yappoon is a lazy beachy town,  just a little grey at the moment.  I am sure that the school holiday travelers flowing into the area with their campers felt the same way!

Kev and I toyed with the idea of another day in Yappoon, but there just was not much going on and we were getting antsy.  The skies were still grey and overcast as we left the area.  We decided to cover as much ground as we possibly could today and rode hard once again hoping for fairer skies.  By three o'clock or so we were getting fairly close to Mackay and decided to veer off towards the coast once more and stay in a small community called Sarina Beach.  There was not much there at all…a huge sign warning us of croc's and stingers, a petrol station that also served as the local takeaway shop, one over priced restaurant, 2 motels and a lonely dog that followed us up and down the street!  It was still too cold and damp to pitch the tent, so we snagged the last room in a simple motel and relaxed.  Friends have advised us to steer clear of the larger towns, such as Rocky or Mackay where the mining industry is booming. Hotels, motels and private camp sites are taking advantage of the huge mining boom and have inflated their accommodation prices…a much appreciated tip…thanks!!

Next stop SUN…at least I hope!

June 6 - 15, 2012...Queensland...10 days of blogging...Go grab a coffee :)

I am finally back blogging!  You do know that this is a lot of work don't you?  I always have so much to share with you.  A lot of the time riding, I find my head full of quotes, jokes, mannerisms and so on!  All I have to do is open the laptop and type...but this is a vacation/holiday…well maybe turning into a way of life???  I will eventually find my groove, and get this blog into boogie mode!...ha ha ha.  I cannot promise that I will be consistent, politically correct, or in some cases a lady, but I will speak from my heart and I so love to share what I have to experienced with you all!...Bear with me :)

Kev and I rode from Goulburn, which was a pretty cool town actually, on, and into Sydney.  We had made contact with an old high school friend of mine and were trying to make a lunch connection.  It is definitely more difficult when you do not have a navigation system.  All seemed to be going well, from what I could tell, and we decided to pull into a petrol station to fill up before lunch.  Wouldn't you know it…but a police officer pulled in behind us and was very curious about our license plates.  He wanted to know if we had the correct paperwork to be riding on the license plates we were displaying.  All I know is that we have some pretty fancy paperwork, eg. carnets that do allow us to travel within Australia.  We showed him all we had and it did seem to satisfy his curiosity and we were allowed to continue!…Phew!

Catching up with friends is a fantastic experience, that just highlights your day, and I am very thankful for that!  Traveling on… the skys were Derwent Pencil blue.  I don't know if you had Derwent Pencils when you were a kid, but I did and they were special pencils.  You only used them for special assignments or projects that required you to receive that "A"…ha ha ha!!!  Anyway that is how I saw the sky today!  Not only was it a Derwent Pencil sky blue but I counted 7 rainbows on the way to who knows… there is no plan today! This absolutely blew my mind!  I actually experienced a full rainbow where you could see the beginning and end…although I did not see any pot of gold…ha ha ha or leprechaun!

Kev and I pulled into Bulahdelah.  We chose a small town pub for the night and I was just digging the local aussie scene.  We got lucky and were able to park out bikes out back in the shed.  Hopefully they could somewhat dry out before getting back on them in the morning!  It was an interesting night….we were woken by bar brawls and street altercations.  Although you could not always comprehend the conversation, it was intense, fiery and exciting to be privy too, and not apart of…ha ha ha!

We awoke the next morning amazed by the calmness, and headed down the rickety hotel staircase for our complementary brekky.  A very interesting night indeed!  Ride baby ride…we need to make up some time if we are going to make it to the meet on time.  The weather is dodgy, but I'm not complaining and love the adventure we are on!

We decided to ride onto Ballina, even though it was getting dark….it would make an easier track for us the next day.  It was a decision that would challenge us for the next couple of hours!!  It began to rain, the visibility was very very poor, and the route became quite challenging.  Trucks do not give a hoots ass about you and all you can do is concentrate on the lit road ahead of you hoping, or hopping that nothing jumps out in front of you…wowzer!  We made it to Ballina, hungry, wet and tired and decided to check into a hotel for the night….bonus a 70's theme Best Western!

Cows and cranes, they seem to go together, and is quite a sight.  Kev and I traveled the Hume Highway…it is quite a straight, monotonous highway and requires some distraction…I spy for example!  Kev and I were playing I spy with my little eye for much of the time traveling towards Dayboro…it is a great game that keeps us alert as we enter a warmer climate…Wow, what a magnificent area of Australia…We stopped at Rainbow Beach, Cresent Head, Lennox Head and my favorite…Byron Bay!  Byron Bay was just spectacular today, maybe more so because it was my birthday and that I could not believe that I was here doing what I am doing…so, so cool!

The bikes always seem to attract attention, and today was no exception… just a spectacular people meeting day!  I am continually amazed at the spirited and bright individualism of everyone we meet…I admire you all, and I smile warmly when I think of you…thank you!!!

Finally, here we are…we made it to Dayboro the town where the Horizons Unlimited 3 day meet is being held…and we will be camping…Oh My!!  This will be the first time since we have left the US that we have pitched a tent!  You know we have not even slept in a tent since the kids have been 10 or so…holly molly, I might need to be medicated!  I have to say that it was pretty exciting pulling into the Dayboro Showgrounds knowing that we were amongst fellow adventure enthusiasts…and some pretty well traveled ones to boot!!

Kev and I selected our camp sight, which had a slight grade to it, thinking that if it really started to pour that we would not be floating in water!  We pulled the tent out and I could tell at this exact moment that we were thinking the same thing…Damn we should have pitched this tent in the lounge before leaving!  Ha Ha Ha…this is going to be good! Maybe we could pull it off???…Maybe we would get lucky???  You reckon mate…no such chance!  After about three attempts of trying to look like we knew what we were doing we decided to pull out the iPhone and Youtube how to pitch our REI 2 plus tent!…ha ha ha  Ahh that's how those poles go together…isn't technology great!  Now this tent is a tad cozy but I am thinking that this will be a good thing with this unpredictable weather.  I was trying to think back to the last actual tent camping that I did, and it was some time ago, at least when the boys were about 10 or so?  I was feeling like a real camper after everything was set up, and I must say that it looked pretty darn cozy…I just know this is going to be fun!  Kev and I hung out and watched all the fellow bike adventurers from all over the world roll up…boy do we have a lot to learn!

That evening the local Bowls Club had invited the Horizons Unlimited Group to dinner.  This group was warmly welcomed by the community of Dayboro and turned into an excellent ice breaker.

Our first night on the ground was rough, although I did manage to get some uninterrupted sleep, in-between the down pours of rain, and unusual harmony of camping snorers!!  I was pleasantly woken up by different groups of bird life, honestly, more than amazing.   I lay there in my red cocoon completely relishing the moment, listening to the banter back and fourth between the groups…"What the hell are they going on about?"  Funny enough… after listening for half an hour or so the chatter subsides…maybe they have all gone to get breakfast?

The travel talks begun…each speaker, every experience and each journey was just awe inspiring and just blew my mind time and time again.   The places that people have been, how they traveled, what they encountered, the challenges they faced, sacrifices made and the immeasurable growth was mind boggling!!!  I honestly felt very very overwhelmed and began to question our journey?  I definitely have a heightened admiration and respect for these people…am I up to the challenge?  Feeling extreeeeemly extreeeeemly green in this area , I was pleasantly warmed by the enthusiasm and support these warriors of the world were showing us…this group of people absolutely ROCK!

Rain, rain and more rain, the weather was beginning to get the best of us.  The group rides were cancelled due to the weather but the informative discussions continued along with our new friendships and connections.  Kev and I survived this tenting experience and I actually felt somewhat confident that I could continue to camp in the future!

Packing up the tent was much easier than setting up, and I know what you are thinking…Yes, we did manage to get it back into its original carrying bag!…ha ha ha

We rode the back roads into Maroochydore thankful that we would be staying in a real bed that night…We are totally exhausted, overwhelmed, and drained…What an awesome 3 days!

Oh yeah, it finally happened, a bird flew right into me!  I'm glad that it was not beak first…ha ha ha!

June 5, 2012...Canberra, Australian Capital Territory

We were offered a fabulous free egg and bacon brekky from the owner of the Hume Inn Motel which worked out to be just what we needed for this weather building day.

Kev was having a hard time pronouncing the towns that we were passing…Wagga Wagga was one of them.  Once Kev added the Aussie tongue to it he worked it out!  We couldn't help ourselves bark Wagga Wagga Wagga Wagga as we radioed back and forth the next couple of hours…ha ha ha…Ahh, the simple things that keep you amused on the road!

We pulled over at Gundagai, where the blue gums are growing and the Murrumbidgee's flowing…ha ha ha, I still remember the song.  We snapped a picture with the dog on the tuckerbox which is a monument to pioneers of the region.  A tuckerbox is a box of food.  In pioneering times it was a dogs role to protect.  The dogs master a bullocky, a driver of a bullock team never returns after being bogged at a river crossing…and it is said that the dog guarded that tuckerbox until its death!

As the day moved on you could feel the cold front catching up to us.  The temperature quickly dropped as we rode through beautiful Snowy River country and continued to drop through the Great Dividing Range and into Canberra.  We had hoped to get into the Sydney area today, but I don't think that it's going to happen.  The temp gauge read 6 degrees Celcius, the challenging and tiring wind gusts read at 27 km/hr and on top of that it was beginning to rain…time to find shelter for the night.  We decided to pull off at Goulburn, 2 hours southwest of Sydney.

June 4, 2012...The Oz Adventure begins

Today we begin our journey north.  The plan is to ride comfortably to Brisbane by Friday, ready for the Horizon Unlimited Bike Conference that weekend.

I cannot tell you how awesome it is to be back on our adventure.  I feel totally comfortable on my bike with all this beautiful space around me…funny…more comfortable than driving a car!  You would not think that you could feel this way, but you do…I have more space to get away from the crazies…ha ha ha.

A cold front in moving up from the Melbourne area and the plan is to be traveling in front of it if possible.  So far we have had drizzles, not enough for us to suit up in our rain gear…my fingers are crossed that we are still a step ahead.

Woo Hoo…We crossed over the Murray River, which is the border that separates the state of Victoria from the state of New South Wales.  Border crossings never get old, along with the left arm fist pump as you cross, ha ha ha.  We pulled into a petrol station to fill up and Kev checked his oil, as the check light had come on.  Kev and I ended up spending the next 2 hours diagnosing then messing and solving the oil problem.  We decided to spend the night in Albury and get a fresh start in the morning.

June 2, 2012...Test rides from Neerim South

I woke up really really excited today…we are going to take the bikes out for at test ride after the reinstalls, and run in my new tires.  It has been 25 days since we have ridden, and I know that I have missed Fe Fe, Phe Phe or as they spell it in Kiwi…Whie Whie…a lot!…ha ha ha

It is bloody freezing this morning, but you can just feel that this frosty morn will grow into a great riding day.  We warmed the bikes up, checked all fluid levels, and hit the rode.  My bike feels pretty darn good, my cheeks feel smiley, puffy and tight in my helmet…my clothing is also a tad tighter, darn…ha ha ha!!  We rode into the suburbs of Melbourne, ran a couple of errands and decided to return.  All was going along fine when I felt something give way on the front end of my bike.  I worked the handlebars a little and figured that it was just my over sensitive stimuli, and that I should probably learn to be less tuned?…Well, maybe I should pull over, I was thinking…just check it out…ahh, but there is a petrol station coming up in the next 10k's so now I'll wait.  Heading off the exit toward the petrol station I down shifted…all was good…then I hit the brakes, only problem was I had no breaks!!!  Holly Sh*t, what is going on, after a couple of attempts, I applied more pressure to the rear breaks, and they were working…thank God…radioed Kev, and stopped front of the petrol pump!  Of course I have just described everything that just happened in ultra slow motion…If i sped it up to real time you would not be able to read it!!!!….ha ha ha…yeah I'm laughing now!  We took a look, and could not believe it!  The complete brake caliper was off and the disk and hanging by the cable clanking against the rim!  I felt very very lucky that caliper was still intact and from what I could tell, somewhat undamaged!  I also feel very very lucky to be sharing this with you!  Kev zip stripped the caliper onto the fork and we proceeded to ride onto the farm.  My brother Paul found me some tractor bolts in the morning to reattach the caliper for the ride north.  Thanks, Paul!

May 30, 2012...Picking up the bikes in Melbourne

Finally the day has arrived,  the bikes have cleared customs and are ready to be picked up.

The storage warehouse for DB Schenker is out by the airport, not that far away.  We had somewhat calculated that the measurements of the bike creates and figured that they would fit side by side onto a trailer that my dad owned.  Paul, my brother had the truck, so we are in business!  All was set up, but you have heard it all before!  You know how this scenario is playing out don't you…I swear,I don't make this stuff up, it just happens and makes for excellent blogging material!…ha ha ha

We receive a call from Paul, who was on his way with the truck and trailer, and he has broken down on the side of the freeway with a suspected broken wheel bearing.  Ok, he is not far away, we can drive the 1981 Toyota Celica Supra, complete with a tow hitch on the back, mind you, collect the trailer and complete our mission!  Done…you have just got to love the picture your mind would be drawing now, hey?  I know that Sarah, our rep at DB Schenker, and Adam, who was charged with loading the crates on our Supra/trailer combo were surprised and curious when we pulled up to the loading dock.  Adam sized up the situation and came up with a genius plan…this may just work!  He cut wooden planks and laid then across the bed of the trailer, put a layer of pallets on the planks and then the crates on top of the pallets.  The creates were butted up against each other and then centrally positioned on the larger pallets that were resting on the boards that Adam cut…ha ha ha!  Got it?  Kev securely strapped down the creates with those awesome ratchet straps…these babies were not going anywhere!  We carefully accellerated towards the exit, the load was longer and taller than the car, I was going to need some pretty serious neck adjustments after this ride home!  It took an hour or so extra traveling at 60k/h to reach the farm where Paul would lift the bike creates off the trailer with his tractor and hay poker forks.  The hay poker fork lift operation was nerve racking for us to watch  Our hearts skipped a couple of beats during this process…but, "no worries" Paul gently placed the creates on the shed floor with expert precision.

I could not believe how darn clean the bikes looked!  We really did a super fantastic job, and can you believe it Aussie Agriculture did not even inspect them!  I'm sure that they had a peak though.  Shanker said Agg's comment was "Oh they're BMW's, they'll be clean"  I really do not know the logic behind this??…All I can say is Thank you Thank you!

We spent the next couple of hours reassembling the bits that were removed from the bikes.

May 17, 2012...Taking a break in Oz

Hi y'all

I'm going to take a blog break…Hmmm, that sounds a little funky…ha ha ha!

I'm going to try and add afew photos and videos during the down time...

Check back in a month when we will be continuing our travels up the eastern coast of Oz…

And thanks for following :)

May 16, 2012...Melbourne

Now in New Zealand the $1 coins are smaller than the $2 coins, which makes sense…but in Oz the $1 coins are larger than the $2 coins??!  Now it has only been 18 months or so since I was in Oz, and yes I am an Aussie…but I have to say that right off the bat, it is a little confusing!  I'm an Aussie in Oz, fingering through my coins trying to figure out what adds up to what, how embarrassing is that!…ha ha ha

Since we are bikeless,  public transportation is the quick cure. For me it is like reliving my childhood escapades…and I think Kev is getting a kick out of it.  As we make our way to the tram stop an tram rolls by with the signage…"no coins no excuses"…Wow, what that heck does that mean I'm wondering??!  I turned to Kev and said "I think that the payment system for the trams has changed…maybe we should find out before we hop on?"  A quick chat with the nearby chemist confirmed my suspicion and we changed a $20 bill into small $2 coins and large $1 coins…ha ha ha, then on we hopped!  I am feeling a little disconnected, to say the least… kinda like a chook without its head!  Maybe I will find my head when I'm back on the bike?

Kev and I plan to spend about a month in Melbourne catching up with family and friends.   It will be a nice lazy break from the day to day bike intensities, although we do miss the excitement of the road!  Our bikes will be ready for pick up between May 30th and June 1st…can't wait!

May 15, 2012...Oz

Today we are leaving New Zealand!  I had picked up a box from Experience BMW to pack our helmets, riding clothes and camping gear.  We packed our waterproof bike duffel with our boots and miscellaneous heavy items.  We carried on our pannieer inserts that had all of our clothing, a backpack of electronics and a shopping bag full of Pineapple Lumps and Ra Ro.  It was a little cumbersome, but it worked!

The airplane entertainment was fabulous, and when I flipped through the selection, the movie "Red Dog" caught my fancy.  One of the hardest things that we faced in making this trip was to find the perfect home for our Blue Dog.  Blue was our loyal, playful, obedient, loving Blue Heeler.  We had raised him from a pup and he was 6 years old when we gave him away.  I miss him!  Well, Kev was having a bit of a sticky and it did not take long for him to select the same movie.  It was a brilliant Aussie movie, based on a true story and wouldn't you know it, soon we were both sobbing, tears running down our faces looking at each other thinking…"Great, just what we need…puffy eyes and red faces to meet Mum and Dad at the airport!"…hey maybe I could get away with it….tears of joy??…ha ha ha…Go rent the movie!

Boarder Control was being filmed at Tullermarine as we made our way through customs…Hmmmm, great!!…Is there a Pineapple Lumps limit for Australia???….ha ha ha

It was fab to see Mum and Dad watching for us, like they have for so many years, as we exited the customs area… they look marvelous too!  Dad drove us home and I could not believe how the city has oozed its way into Melbourne's suburbia, a little culture shock for us…there is no stopping progress!!!  We are embarking on a new adventure in my birth country…I am really, really excited!  We found that we thrived on the adventure and excitement of riding around New Zealand for seven weeks.  Oz is a huge country and this will be a real undertaking!  Our first leg will take us into early October.

The things that I enjoyed most about New Zealand are:  the fabulous friendly people, incredible roads for riding, one lane bridges over raging rivers, beautiful beaches, a vibrant countryside, surprises around every corner, and awesome food including Bluff oysters, scallops, Hokey Pokey, warm Ra Ro and passionfruit gelato.  We'll be back!!

Kiwi's spend a lot of time on the beach!  On a windy day they go kite surfing or blow carting; when the waves are right they go surfing; and, on still day they go supping.  They are adventurers in every sense of the word and I love it!

May 14, 2012...Auckland

Wind was once again on our mind today, not for blokarting but for kite surfing.  Kev and I wanted to squeeze in another kite surfing lesson if possible before leaving for Oz tomorrow.  We're in luck, 1:30pm at Point Chev!

Michael offered to take Kev and I on a city tour of Auckland, and drop us off at our lesson later.  We drove into the city and traveled up the southern hemisphere's most tallest building, the Sky Tower.  The views from the tower were amazing and gave you a very complete picture of the area around.  Auckland was built on 8 volcano's, and several craters are still visible, it's just fascinating.  Yum Cha for lunch…Mmmmm Yum Cha, then off to Point Chev for our lessons.

When we arrived at the point it was not very blowy.  We waited and waited and waited.  We watched the water looking for dark patches and chop that would indicate some air activity.  It was kinda iffy whether or not the 15 knot gappy gusts would be consistent enough to make our lesson worth while?  We decided to go for it…we're here and eager.  We got suited up, set up the kite and lines, and headed into the water.  Today's plan was to get up on the board, but mother nature just didn't give us enough puff.  We worked on dragging and kite control and finally called the lesson when the wind got too light.  Even though we did not get up onto the board today we felt happy that we had spent time in the water…Any water time is better than no water time!!

Kelsey and Michael drove us to a near by store so that we could pick up some last minute Pineapple Lumps and RaRo to bring our nieces and nephews in Oz.  Kev and I enjoyed our final family dinner with the Robinson's that night and planned our early morning exit to the airport.

Kent, Cynthia, Michael and Kelsey…Thank you very much for your warmth, friendship and hospitality…we will miss you!  We could live in Auckland you know!

May 13, 2012...Mothers Day

Ahh…it is such a wonderful feeling to sleep in... and an absolute bliss to experience that ebb and flow of dream drowsiness…don't you agree?? For the most part Kev and I have been up and at it early… brekkied, bike loaded, and beautiful for the day ahead! Oh yeah, and today is Mothers Day…I think that I will try and finish that cool dream I was just having!  Well that does not always work…ha ha ha…so, up you get!

Kent and Cynthia greeted us with huge smiles and warm hearts, and a morning coffee…are we too old to be adopted???  Kent had arranged a day of Blokarting at Piha Beach, New Zealand's most dangerous beach…Awesome, I could not imagine a better way to spend Mothers Day!…What the heck is blokarting?  Well, a blokart is land yaucht.  It's a 3 wheeled cart that you sail across the beach, and actually pretty boring!  Yeah, I'm pulling your leg about being boring, haven't you figured me out by now??  Blokarting is the bees knees baby!  We couldn't hide our non competitive spirit and huge frowns from the group as Kev and I wove in and out of each others path.

Tacking up the beach was fun, but racing down the beach was super exhilarating, with no strenuous body work required, Bonus…we all had a blast!  A spontaneous picnic and coffee stop at Swanson Station rounded off a very memorable day, and Kent's famous Kiwi Burgers for tea just blew or should I say blo it away…ha ha ha…Thanks guys!

May 12, 2012...Auckland

Six or so weeks ago, when we started moving on the South Island of New Zealand, we ran into a fun group of Northern Kiwis... pretty much the first day.  I have blogged about running into this lively group of 12 earlier in my posts.  Long story short is we have kept in contact and Kent and Cynthia and they have graciously invited us to come and stay with them until we depart for Oz Tuesday morning.  The plan is to get the whole group together for a BBQ tomorrow and I'm really quite excited!

We feel extremely, extremely lucky to have met such warm, friendly and fabulous people here in New Zealand.  The fact that a complete stranger would offer you the comfort of their home based on similar interests is huge and extremely humbling!  Just because of that Kev and I have stopped in at all the Mackers, and approached all large groups of Kiwi's we have seen just incase we run into another Kiwi Kevin, or Dirty Dozen….NO!…ha ha ha…It makes a great story though :)

Kent graciously picked us up from our small Motel at Mission Bay and drove us to his home in Albany.  We were greeted by Cynthia, his wife, Michael the oldest son, who had made a surprise trip home from Brisbane for Mothers Day, and Kelsey their wonderful and lovely daughter.  Cynthia showed us to our bedroom, that used to be Aaron's room and we quickly settled in.  Not long after we got there, Kent and Cynthia said…"OK let's go!"  We piled into the car and drove down to Milford Beach and walked along the beach until we reached Takapuna.  It was a lovely walk, and we got reacquainted along the way…it was perfect!

After the walk to Takapuna Michael picked us up and drove us through the cute town of Devonport and then onto North Head.  North Head was fab, the views were post card perfect, and I went camera crazy!…It was such an exciting and tranquil sight, if that makes sense…ha ha ha!  There were colorful sail boats all over the harbor, tacking here, tacking there…you can tell I'm a sailor hey??? North Head, a volcano, was a spectacular viewing point of Auckland's shiny futuristic silver city, and all of the sailing activity was going on around us…well that was the icing on the cake!  We walked around checking out the old cannons and batteries from days gone, and then decided to go and get some ice-cream, and find a lotto store!…Oh yeah, feeling very lucky!!  Michael, our professional driver, he is you know!!!…Michael drives road trains in Brisbane!… He drove us down into the township, we squeezed out of the car, they make the parking spots so small these days… and chose our flavors.  A scoop of passsionfruit for me, mint chocolate chip for Cynthia, and I can't remember what the guys had??  Cynthia ran her numbers, and I purchased the max triple dip that also put me in for the Mothers Day drawing!…Yeah, feeling really, really lucky!

That evening Kent and Cynthia had planned a potluck dinner at their house with the balance of the "dirty dozen" Craig and Lisa, Alison and H, Shirley and Hugh, Tracey and Barry, Lee and Darren, and Cynthia and Kent…so, so cool!! Kev and I had a fabulous time eating, drinking, laughing and catching up with this fabulous group.  We partied into the next day…shock!!!…it wasn't even New Years Eve!!!…ha ha ha

May 11, 2012...Point Chevalier

Today we will not be focusing our time on the bikes.  They are scheduled to be picked from Experience BMW by DB Schenker at 1pm, be weighed, measured and set to transport…they are in good hands.  Air would get the bikes to us by Friday next week, and Ocean would have them to us the first week in June.  When the finalized weights and props come in later today we'll make a decision!

So what to do???…We have decided on either tramping the volcano or Kite Surfing lessons…We chose Kite Surfing!  We headed down to the corner cafe for a late brekky and caught the bus into the Britomart (downtown Aucklands transport hub) figured out the next bus to hop on to get over to Point Chevalier.  This is going to be totally sweet!…I'm really really excited!!!

It took us about 75 minutes to get over to Point Chev on the bus, but it was all good and ended up being pretty darn cheap sight seeing tour!  We met up with Dean, a totally chill dude who sorted us with wetsuits, booties and a harness and introduced us to our instructor Bruce.  The instruction was going to be 3 hours long and the first hour would be on land learning how to layout and set up the equipment, pumping up the leading edge, kite handling on land, and the basics with the control bar. Bruce was super thorough and had us working on all areas of the assembly.  Next it was a matter of understanding how the grip and tension on the control bar controlled the kite.  OK…now we are ready for the water!  This first water lesson will be without the board, kinda disappointed.  I was wondering how this was going to work?  Our kite is 8m and it's an onshore blow around 15 - 20 knots…Woo Hoo Hoo.  The tide was quite a ways out as we awkwardly made our way into the warm bay until we were in waist deep water.  Just getting out there was wild…I sank so far down into the sandy silty earth, at some point over knee level that it felt like trying to walk through quicksand…Kev and I ate it a few times on the way out, I couldn't wipe the smile off my face this is an absolute blast!

Bruce hooked up and went through the basics on how to launch the kite off the water…of course he made it look super easy!  He explained how the kite reacts in the power zone, and how it reacts in the neutral zone…again, easy peasy hey??? "OK Cat, let's hook you up" he said…Let's do it!…Oh No…off I flew like a hot air balloon, "Cat Cat" Bruce and Kev are yelling "drop the control bar sister"…ha ha ha…Nah, just being silly, I know you we're all thinking that, so I ran with it, or flew with it…ha ha ha!  So as you can already tell we absolutely had no fun at all!  Once the kite is airborne it flies around 20m above, your grip is super light and gentle right to left pull controls the direction of the kite.  The power behind this bright sail is addicting, and the fact that it is in water, even today without the board, is bloody fantastic!  I was having some trouble keeping the kite up of any length of time, but, Kev nailed it!  Bruce kept taking us through the launching and landing of the kite, a running relaunch which was hilarious in this silty sandy bottom and keeping the kite at 10 or 2, for the next hour until we got it.  Next it was time to move onto figure eight flying and body dragging.  Bruce hooked me up and it all just synced, I was figure eighting 10 to 2 and being dragged with Bruce hanging on behind me toward the beach…Woo Hoo.  What a feeling, that was incredible!!  Ahh I hope the wind does not change and wipe the smile off my face!..Ohh I crack myself up!  This went on for the last hour of the lesson…Kev and I just loved the feeling of being pulled out of the water, kinda like the feeling of wake boarding under your own power.  Bruce ran through how to collect the kite on the water, wind up everything without getting it all knotted up and the total dismantle.  The sun was setting as we left the water…It was a purely SWEET day!  You and I know, that this will not be our only lesson, if we do not have time for another in New Zealand before we leave, we will follow through in Oz until we are flying solo!  Dean went out of his way and drove us back to Mission Bay, once again absolutely fabulous Kiwi hospitality!…Thanks :)

Oh yeah I almost forgot...we decided on Ocean Freight!

May 10, 2012...and sorting

Happy Birthday to my bike…today she is 1 year old and has 12,683 miles on her.  She is well broken in and has been laid down once… I'm sure it will happen again!  For her birthday she was fitted with a new set of dual sport tires….Aweee :)  I had been complaining off and on about a wobble or kind of loose feeling in the front forks.  Experience BMW found a faulty bearing and fixed it.  I'm really excited to see how she now handles, but this will have to wait until I'm in Oz.

We caught public transportation today…the bus to downtown Auckland, then the train to Kingsland.  Ahh, that's more like it, $12 verses $50!  The bikes were parked out the front and we could see that there was still more cleaning to be done on them…Can you believe it?…We cleaned for another couple of hours on them!  At least we know that we have given our best effort for them to pass the agricultural inspection in Oz…fingers crossed!  We also emptied our boots and pants out of the paneers, just in case we decided to hire a couple of bikes to tie us over until ours arrive.

Our bikes are serviced, our bikes are bug, plant, sand, dirt, blood, feather and whisker free (road kill…ha ha ha) Experience BMW does and has gone above and beyond what we expected.  Tomorrow DB Schenker will be picking up our crated bikes from the dealership.  We are feeling pretty darn good about the co-rdination between the businesses and the piece of mind their expertise brings…Thanks guys!

May 9, 2012...Still sorting

I had turned on the heater  to dry out our clothing over night…unfortunately they did not dry, so we ended up wearing very warm moist clothing…maybe they will dry out as we ride?

We had to get the bikes over to the dealership first thing this morning.  It had rained all through the night and just started to clear at dawn…we lucked out.  As fun as yesterday was it would be good to be a little dry part of the day?

Experience BMW was pulling their bikes out as we rode up, we had about 30 minutes to clean on the bikes some more before they went to service.  They were both due for a full service, and mine needed new tires, the bikes would be ready tomorrow.  Dominic with DB Schenker was able to meet with us today, so we caught a taxi out to their offices by the airport to discuss shipping and air details through them.

DB Schenker has it together.  All the fees and possible charges were outlined and broken down into Export and Import categories…this is what we wanted to see.  We had picked up our carnets from Go Logistics just in case we decided on DB Schenker.  Carnets are kind of like a passport for your bikes.  We discussed the crating and pick up of the bikes from Experience BMW, and what to expect when we arrive in Melbourne.  Kev and I felt much better about the fact that the Melbourne portion of this transaction was not outsourced.  It is a very confusing and quite expensive process to ship the bikes from New Zealand…but they are here and we need to get them there… there is no turning back…forever forward my friend!

Feeling more confident with DB Schenker handling our bike transit we caught a taxi back to the BMW dealership to pick up our jackets and helmets and discuss the air pallet verses the ocean crate bike prepping.  All you can do is ask a ton of questions and keep asking until you understand, otherwise it is all double dutch!  Finally we called it a day and caught a taxi back to Mission Bay.  Todays running around in taxis had been quite costly and we've spent $150.00 NZD…Cricky, just light a match and burn a few more $50's hey???  Maybe we can figure out how to make it back to BMW tomorrow on the bus or train?…Yes we need to go back tomorrow!

Daniel at Experience BMW lent us the 2008 Oz BMW Rally dvd to watch tonight…cool, a movie, a great plan for tonight.  We watched the dvd an turned to each other and said…"Maybe we should just fork out the extra cash and air the bikes, I don't know if we can handle waiting the 20 days to get them?"  If we chose air we could be riding by Friday!…ha ha ha….Man this movie could cost us!!!  Kev and I ran through the day to day costs on the dollar difference in the 2 shipping methods and I think that we have decided to ocean freight them.  I think????…Ya know we're still a little wishy washy on it all. Thankfully DB Schenker can go either way and will be able to make a solid decision once the final weight is recorded with them and the cost is finalized.  Oh yeah, after watching the dvd, we will definitely be in on the 2012 BMW Oz Rally too!!  That's a no brainer!

May 8, 2012...Getting it sorted!

Today we are on it!  The plan is to ride out to Go Logistics and check on the shipping details to Oz, then onto Experience BMW Auckland to setup the bikes servicing and crating schedule.  We googled the directions from the Motel to Go Logistics, then from Go to BMW, then back to the Motel.  I think that we are set?  From where the city sets we have a good idea of what direction we need to be heading in to hopefully run into a motorway…Let's do it!  We have taken everything out of the panniers, sorted out what's staying on the bike, cleaned the items and then repacked the panniers.  We are feeling lucky that we actually did not pitch the tent as you know with those puppies, once you unravel the package it never fits back to that small size again…ha ha ha!

We had no problems getting over to Go Logistics.  It was by the airport, and we were just out there the other day…bonus!  We met with Chris and reviewed the shipping details.  The plan was to air freight the bikes directly to Melbourne…but there seemed to be a couple of loose ends that made Kev and I a little insecure with this company.  We addressed our concerns and decided to contact another company that we had been working with to see if their paperwork was a little more thorough?   The problem is nailing down the fees on the Oz end.  We are trying to get a handle on the numbers and would really like to avoid any surprises, if possible.  We still have time to work this out?

The ride over to Experience BMW was no drama, I could hardly believe it…Navi you may have been replaced?  We discussed the timeline with Sebastian and he could not have been more accommodating.  We were comforted by his experience and knowledge and knew that we would be well taken care of.  It was too late to start servicing the bikes today so we decided to ride over to Wash World and get a started on the washing.  You have to be very careful when you pull the bikes up into the washing bays as they can be very slippery.  I almost dropped my bike once slipping on a greasy, wet patch.  It is not the greatest feeling, and quite strenuous trying to hold up a 225kg lump of machinery!

We have a ton of coins and could wash all night if we have too!  Kev pulled off the panniers and extra jerry cans…here we go!  Don't you just love pressure washers…they rock, and those soapy brushes aren't too shabby either…ha ha ha!  While we were washing up a storm the skies decided to unload a storm full…and boy did it come down, and...there was no sign that it would be letting up anytime soon.  I guess if we missed a soapy spot it would be rinsed off by mother nature…bonus!  Now many coins and an hour or so later we rode back to the Motel in this torrential rain, wind, and rush hour traffic.  I'm not frosting this either, it was coming down, baby!  This could be interesting!  We had asked the guys in the bay next to us for directions towards Mission Bay… luckily it was not too complicated.  Man was it pouring, it reminded me of the Rotorua experience just in a ton more traffic!  It was hard to keep our visors from fogging up so you needed to ride with it half open, but closed enough so your eyes were not bulleted with stinging rain drops.  I'm glad that today we did not wear our full riding get up, it would be hard enough drying out the jackets tonight.  As intent and focused you were on the challenges of this ride you could not help but have this huge grin on your face, and a feeling of a kid stomping through puddles!!  Woo Hoo!!  We arrived back at the motel feeling like teenage drowned rats and turned to each other and said…"Did you feel that huge gust of wind cornering the point?"…ha ha ha…I swear it almost stopped my bike…Good times!  Now we had worked up quite an appetite, so we decided to check out the German restaurant just a block from us.  There was no possible way to dry off…I must say it was kind of fun having a beer in a restaurant dripping wet.  A great day!

May 7, 2012...Mission Bay

Good Morning…Ahh… we woke up in Mission Bay…a very very cool little seaside area!  How did we luck out on this?  This week will be full on bike cleaning, organization and shipping arrangements to Oz.  But today we are going to have a day of R&R!  This is a very cool little town, quite trendy almost "up market" as Mum would say! We ended up less than a block from the water… you can actually hear it from our room…love that!  The coastal main road is lined with these huge grand old trees who's roots have uplifted the footpaths paving…you know that these wise beauties have seen and heard it all! The area is not too built up which is refreshing and still has a comfy community feel.

There is a movie theatre about a 15 minute walk away…Right On!…We'll get some lunch and go to a movie…The Avengers it is!  Don't you just love the Hulk!..ha ha ha
